The nēnē, the world’s rarest goose, is found only in Hawai‘i and is the official State Bird. Adapted for traversing rugged terrain like lava plains, their strong feet feature padded toes and reduced webbing. The female constructs a simple ground nest, incubating one to four eggs for about a month while her loyal mate stands guard.
